Become a MEMBER - FERSI Overview


The Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes (FERSI) was established in 1991 with the objective of encouraging collaboration between European road safety research institutes. Such collaboration was, and continues to be, necessary to ensure that the problems of road safety in European countries are researched by the best available expertise, and that the results of the research are implemented in the most appropriate and effective way, both at national or at European level.
The mission of FERSI is to contribute to improve road safety through ensuring that the problems of road safety in European countries are researched by the best available expertise and are implemented in the most effective and appropriate way.
FERSI Mission is realised through the following objectives:
  • Enhance the scientific quality of research, and to encourage the exchange of researchers between countries
  • Stronger and proactive role in European Road Safety enhancement.
  • Promoting national and European mechanisms and tools to enhance road safety.
  • Promote Road Safety in EC & National Research Strategic Agendas.
  • Propose policies & recommendations to European Research Priorities and European Parliament.
  • Enhance Road Safety awareness through campaigns and public Road Safety actions

  • Only one member (the official Road Safety research institute or university) from each European country is or may become a member of FERSI. FERSI currently encompasses 21 members from equal number of European Countries. The Figure below shows the current European countries which are members of FERSI. PICTURE
    The annual membership fee is 2,800 € for each member.
    Member benefits include:
  • Active participation in pan-European research and coordination of national research agendas and actions.
  • Structured input to Framework Programme Research Agendas, ERA setup in Transport and EC DG’s on relevant policies.
  • Setup and follow-up of Research joint initiatives and projects.
  • Free of cost use of the FERSI tools (collaborative framework, database, etc.).
  • Reduced fee and privileged access to FERSI initiated or endorsed events (Workshops, Seminars, Conferences, etc.)

  • The FERSI Executive Board will review your application and upon preliminary acceptance it will discuss it in the next General Assembly meeting, which is organized on bi-annual basis. In case the application is pre-accepted by the FERSI General Assembly, your Institute will be invited to present its position at the next FERSI General Assembly meeting.
    FERSI is not by any means obliged to provide explanations for eventual rejection of the application nor is there a mechanism for appeal. In case of applicant is eligible FERSI may request additional information and documentation about road safety research activities, publications and projects. Moreover, FERSI reserves the right to request for a Mandate from the national Ministry of Transport or relevant Road Safety national Authority, in case multiple actors on Road Safety exist in your country.
